One of the tweets I found this week that I thought was super interesting was from Fiorela (@Fio28pal), and it said that dogs are preferred in biomedical research because they have more similarities to humans. I started following @AnimalsAsia, @Protect_Wldlife, @BetterLife4Anim, @ciwf, and @HumaneSociety to see how different organizations worked to preserve the habitats and well-being of animals in their respective regions. I thought that it would be super interesting to see how Compassion in World Farming (ciwf) might address dogs in the work place. I have been reading articles about dog's behavior and one of them referred to a dogs purpose in the work place. It left me wondering if there is any sort of mistreatment or if the dogs should even be used because they might feel forced into their roles. I think that these would be great places to find information like that about dogs and other animals as well. I also started following @JessLReid, @Phil500, @willtravers, @angie_karan, @soul_eubanks who are all involved in some sort of animal activism or animal rights activism. I think that this is extremely important because we take the wildlife around us for granted. We destroy their homes, families, and lives with no remorse or repercussions, and that is simply awful to do to another species.
This week I responded to Janelle Tan who is doing their research project on elephant self-cognition. In her post, it was so sad to hear about an elephant named Happy who has been in solitary confinement for the past 16 years. That is not only completely wild that they have been allowed to keep her that long but also completely infuriates me that we continue to let things like this happen. The second person I responded to was Ariel Martinez who talked about an article they found that spoke on theory of mind and how it specifically had to with chimpanzees. The last post that I responded to was Rachel Lynn Loberstein who had a similar experience as I did on twitter. They were able to find a tweet about elephants mourning the loss of a loved one that resonated with them, and I was able to pick my research topic because of what a classmate tweeted about. Overall, it's been an okay week so far, glad I am getting more comfortable with twitter and blogging.
